Hypergly - Diabetes Management

Keep It Simple - Aug 08

Tip of the Month

Hypergly is a website that developed because I felt there was a gap to be filled. That gap is the need for a message to all people with Diabetes especially new ones, that you need to keep diabetes as simple as possible. By doing so you will help yourself to manage your diabetes better.

I do feel however that you would benifit yourself if you understood what diabetes is all about . ie What is diabetes, what effect is it having and will it have on my body.

What do I mean by ''Keep it simple'' Well try to remember the word DIET for example.

The first letter is simple D for Diet. This is critical for your management of diabetes.

The second letter I for Insulin. Remember to take your insulin and in the correct dose. More on this in later updates.

The third letter E for Exercise. Exercise is an important part. All these last three items go hand in hand with your management of your diabetes. They all balance against one another.

The last letter is T. T is for team work. You are not alone with diabetes. You have a full team of specialists who will work with you. Ask your Doctor or visit your local health centre.

As you come back to visit this website you will find more tips like this which I hope will help you in you understanding and also your self management of diabetes.

Thought of the Month

I don't know about you, but I do my best thinking in the evening. I also think deeper when I'm out walking. So with that in mind I took a walk to my local food chain store to buy a few odds and ends, coffee, bread (whole meal of course) etc. I also thought that I would also take the opportunity to increase my daily steps. Re: interesting info tab.

When I entered the store I walked to the coffee Isle picked my choice of coffee and it suddenly struck me. My thought was how lucky we are in the western world to be able to have a choice of all this food. My second thought was as people with diabetes, we are also lucky to have the chance to obtain Insulin to help control our diabetes.

So next time you enter your local food store please spare a thought for all those who have diabetes, but are not fortunate enough to be able to obtain the Insulin we take for granted.

Topic of the Month

One of the most noticeable effects of having diabetes is the gradual or total loss of eyesight.

When you talk to your eye specialist they will use terms that may be unformiliar to you. I have listed below some of the terms you may hear and their meanings.

CATARACTS are caused when the eye's lens hardens and becomes slightly cloudy. This lens focuses on what we see.

FLOATERS is a term given to black spots that are sometimes seen floating accross the vision.

GLAUCOMA is a condition where the pressure of the fluid in the eye is too high and causes damage to the optic nerve. This nerve tells the brain what to see.

MACULAR DEGENERATION happens when the cells of the macula become damaged and stop working.

RETINAL DETACHMENT sometimes happens in people whose retina has been weakened by a tear or a hole. The fluid in the eye seeps behind the retina causing it to detach from the rear of the eye.

Please follow up your research into this topic with the NHS website which also gives you easily accessable general infomation. http://www.retinalscreening.nhs.uk/

Song Verse of the Week-Whats in a Verse!

"I would like you to know
When you see the simple things
To appreciate this life
It's not too late to learn"

Well as I like the music of Iron maiden I thought I would take a verse form their song 'Different World' which I thought might be appropriate for the message I am giving out to people with Diabetes.

'I would like you to know'. Well that's self explanatory, I would like you to know all you can about diabetes.

'When you see the simple things'. You could say take note of the simple guide lines / gadgets that are used for management of diabetes . (Keep It Simple)

'To appreciate this life'  I would read that as saying to me 'To get the best out of life' regardless of condition.

And finally 'It's not too late to learn'  Well i think we would all agree on that one. So you can  start taking in a bit of diabetes management knowledge. Even if its just the basics which will help you keep your HbA1c in trim.

P.S

Can I persuade you to listen to some Iron maiden, maybe a couple of tracks - 'Can I Play with Madness' or perhaps 'The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg'
